Izotope Rx Spectral Analysis
Garageband mac music editor. So I’m currently working on post for a short film and was using RX-2 in the audiosuite mode in PT10 to help attenuate a pop in the production audio. I highlighted the problem area and played it back to discover that the particular section I had highlighted returned a fantastic woosh sound that I thought would be awesome to have in my SFX library. Whilst RX-2 has some cool options for ‘output noise only’ in some of it’s modules, I looked to see if the spectral repair had a ‘output selection only’ but to no avail. That’s when I went digging to think of a way to get this highlighted section to an audio track in Pro Tools. I opened up the audio in RX-2’s standalone mode and highlighted the area again. I connected my iMac’s headphone port to my 002 using a 3.5mm to 2 x 6.35mm TRS inputs and used my preset track-hack of computer audio and used that bus as an input in Pro Tools. I hit record and went back to RX-2 and replayed the sound. Voila, I now had a copy of the highlighted section as an audio track that I could then bombard with my arsenal of sound design plug-ins at my wish. I guess it’s similar to the spectral features in iZotope’s Iris but even playing around a bit more with this technique, I was able to highlight some pretty bizarre and weird sections of the movie’s production audio to give me some really unique sounds for my library.
Mike - You are so right about using RX as a sound design tool. The Decontruct module in RX Advanced is especially useful and you are right about using the Output Only option to create lots of sound design ideas. When using the Spectral Repair plug-in, there are two play buttons, the Play All and Play Selection, just as there are in the standalone version. If you use the Play selection then it will just play the selection but as you are using the Audition feature in the AudioSuite plug-in Pro Tools still has to play the selected clip, but you will only get sound for the selection in the Spectral Repair window so there maybe be some silence before you hear your whoosh.
